Looking back at when Emmet was Henry's age is already a little bit of a blur! Only two years and the little details about our days together have already started to slip. Sure I remember highlights, but we spent so much time together and it makes me so sad that I have already forgotten some of the little details. So I decided it would be fun to have my camera on hand today (when possible) and capture a day in our life currently. My goal was to take a photo an hour, though sometimes I took more than one and sometimes I missed an hour. But here are a few snippets from our day and what it is like with Emmet at 2.25 years and Henry at almost 4 months.
7:30am- Emmet is usually the alarm clock of the house. Henry sometimes wakes up a little before, like he did this morning, to nurse but usually we like to try to go back to sleep. This morning, however, I laid Henry back down and he cooed and giggled in his pack and play until we heard Emmet start chatting in his room. Despite how sleepy Emmet looks, he woke up really happy and immediately asked for his books down off of the shelf so that he could read them, and he read happily and played by himself for a little while (a rare occurrence in the morning!)
8:00am- after Henry has been fed and I've rounded everyone up, our first task of the day is usually to go out for a walk! We love exploring our neighborhood and starting the day with fresh air. I started morning walks on my maternity leave with Emmet and then restarted them after I quit my day job and have been keeping up with them almost every day since! It is my favorite way to clear my head for thing in the morning. Emmet usually eats his breakfast while we stroll and Henry just sits and stares. This morning however I let Emmet get out and run in hopes that he would take a good nap later!
9:00am- Some mornings this is when we start getting ready for our day, to go to playgroup or some other activity. But when we don't have anything planned we like to use this time to play and learn! We'll bake something, practice letters, numbers, colors, animals, etc. This morning I set up all of Emmet's animals and got out our book Animalium and we worked on animal names together. Meanwhile Henry worked on holding up his head and reaching out to grab the toys on his play gym from Lil' Peach E Design.
At one point I stepped into the other room and I heard Emmet saying "whoooooa." When I went to investigate I found him sitting on his bench pointing at his animals. They had all fallen down, which Emmet even told me with his own words.
10:00am-Emmet got bored of his animals and wanted to go outside so we stepped out to water the flowers. Emmet is in charge of the hose and watering the flowers.... which means he fills up the watering cans and mostly waters himself and the grass directly in front of the garden while I use the full watering can to actually water the flowers. Henry contributes by watering them with his spit bubbles. This morning we had to abruptly stop, because Emmet smacked the gutter with his watering can, thus stirring the wasps out of their nest, who chased us down and stung me. I freaked out because I am deathly afraid of wasps, scared the crap out of Emmet, and dragged a whimpy me, an oblivious Henry, and a crying Emmet back inside. Darn gutter wasps.
11:00am-12:30pm - Our usual time to fix and sit down to lunch together. We've been scraping things together lately rather than having elaborate lunches planned. Today Emmet ate his favorite Annie's mac and cheese and fed a little to his duck (and to Moose) too.
12:30-4:30pm- I refer to these hours as our "dark hours." It is the time that Emmet and Henry both usually take naps and have quiet time. No one is invited over, we don't make any noise, and I refuse to answer any phone calls.
Today Henry fell asleep first (win!) and then I read to Emmet and tucked him in. He played quietly in his room for a full hour and a half before playing at the door and telling me he went poo poo. I changed him and laid him back down and he slept until 4:30-5. It was AMAZING. Henry slept on and off, I watched the new season of Orange is the New Black and sipped on some toddy. These are the afternoons I love the most as I thrive on getting alone time during the day.
4:30pm - Emmet woke up happy as could be. He immediatey requested his books again and read them in his bed. He then asked for and played with his birds and his xylophone quietly in his room. Moose is usually nearby, and when Emmet is playing independently I try to get some chores or some shop work done. Today however, I just sat and watched him.
5:00- More play time! Our bed is one of Emmet's favorite places to play! We called a my sister and our friend Natalie and curled up with his birds to play for a little while.
6:00pm - Waiting for Dada to come home. 6:00 can sometimes be the hardest as we spend a lot of it waiting. Today was special though, as Dave came home a little earlier so that we could pile in the car to go to The Breadbasket with his family. Emmet sat and pointed out all of his family members, then played with his car on the floor, poked a few dead flies, and gave everyone at the table 2-3 fist bumps.
After dinner we met at the park to swing and play soccer with his cousins and Emmet was finally up late enough to catch fireflies for the first time ever! Usually we have a strict 8:00 bedtime, but sometimes we make exceptions.
