I finally got my hands on the ORIGINAL pictures from our house and oh my goodness are they gems. With this new discovery of photos I give to you our kitchen's growth from horrible ugliness to almost done along with all of the work we did at each step.
I forget how much work we have put into this house until I look all the way back to the beginning. Dave recently sent me these photos from when we first started working on the house (a long long time ago) and it is crazy how different it looks then verses now.
At this point we had:
-ripped out a layer of carpet from the entire kitchen (and the rest of the house)
-scraped out two (yes TWO) layers of horrible linoleum
-opened up the doorway between the living room and the kitchen (I completely had forgotten that we did that)
-taken out the weird light fixture in the "dining room" section
You can still see the old kitchen countertops/backsplash (yes it curves up and becomes both), the old light fixtures, the oval shelf on the left of the kitchen, and the old hardware on the cabinets.
Soon after laying in the wood floor we decided it would be okay to move in (dave moved in first... but I spent a lot of time there. We were using a mini fridge and a microwave for awhile before the appliances came in). You can sort of see the wood floor in this picture. Dave and his brothers laid the wood floors and then I helped them sand and stain them this beautiful rich brown. We lived at this point for a loooong time.
-switched out the lighting about the sink and the main light (though this still needs some work because it is dull)
-layed new wood floors, sanded and stained them
-Ripped out the weird oval shelf and replaced it with space for a dishwasher
-Painted the walls a brighter white
-added in appliances and furniture
-Ripped out the majority of the old countertop/backsplash
-added in a butcher block countertop
-installed a new kitchen sink
-moved in all of our pretty things
This summer I have found myself having a beautiful amount of free time to do with as I please, so I got back to work on the kitchen. It feels soo much better to have finally spent a little bit more time on the kitchen. Of course there is still a little bit more to go (an understatement), but what we have so far makes it feel ten times better.
This summer we have:
-painted all windows, door trim, and doors, white.
-removed all of the ugly old blinds
-added in curtains to the "dining room" window
-removed all items from the cabinets and painted the insides white
-painted the back wall of the cabinets black
-painted the trim between the kitchen and the laundry room an accent black
-removed all hardware and cabinet doors.
-filled the holes on the top cabinet doors (to add new hardware)
-painted half of the cabinet doors white
-finished scraping off the rest of the god awful backsplash to reveal the rest of the camo
We still have to do:
-finish filling holes and sanding the cabinet doors and drawers
-paint the rest of the cabinets and drawers
-add in the white glass tile backsplash (we have decided to outsource this one thing)
-hang the new cabinet doors with new hinges
-put on new pulls to the cabinets and drawers
-buy/add in a new microwave and install it above the stove
-officially hang and hook up the new dining room light (right now it is just hanging there... my hint hint wink wink nudge nudge to dave to hook it up for real ;) )
-finish covering all the outlets
-finish adding in the floorboard trim (and paint it)
We still have a lot to go, but man has it come a long way. What would you add in or do differently? xo Leah
